Lagos Assembly Mourns Victor Akande  …Says He Served Meritoriously

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have expressed profound grief over the passing of one of their distinguished former members, Hon. Victor Olusegun Akande, who represented Ojo Constituency I from 2015 to 2023 and served as the Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions and LASIEC. He died recently at the age of 59 after a brief illness.
Raising the matter on the Floor during plenary, Hon. Tijani Suraju (Ojo Constituency II) described the late Akande as more than just an ordinary legislator, but an exemplary one whose commitment to public service remains commendable.
Honorable members took turns to mourn the deceased.
In his tribute, Hon. Femi Saheed, Kosofe 2, stated that the deceased was a lawyer and a lawmaker, who served his constituents wholeheartedly, saying that he was outspoken, principled, saying that they learned a lot from him.
Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, Eti Osa 2, described the late Akande as a friendly colleague and diligent legislator who he said demonstrated professionalism and due diligence, especially in committee engagements.
Hon. Tobun Abiodun, Epe 1, stressed the need to revisit the law that ensures adequate welfare and support for former lawmakers in times of need, especially in matters relating to health.
He emphasised that such measures would serve as a lasting legacy in honour of committed legislators.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, described the  late Akande as a committed public servant who played a vital role in shaping legislative policies for the growth and development of Lagos State.
“We are saddened by this loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and constituents of our dearly departed colleague,” the Speaker said.
Other members of the House also acknowledged his invaluable contributions to the legislative arm and paid glowing tributes to his legacy of service.
