EFCC Chair To ADC: ‘Accountability Is The Only Immunity’

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has dismissed claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that recent EFCC summons to opposition figures were “politically motivated” and based on “old cases,” accusing the party of trying to shield politically exposed persons from scrutiny.

“There is no time limit on criminal investigations. Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There are no sacred cows or partisan considerations in our work,” Olukoyede said. “Nothing will compel an innocent person to answer charges from the EFCC.”

He emphasised that EFCC probes cut across party lines, with serving governors, ministers, and senior members of the ruling party currently under investigation. “Many serving state governors of various political colours are on the EFCC radar,” he noted.

Olukoyede argued that his work had attracted no backlash when probing ruling party figures and should not be condemned now that opposition leaders are under the spotlight. He refused to reveal details of ongoing investigations “no matter the provocation.”

While acknowledging ADC’s point that the EFCC “belongs to the Nigerian people” and is “funded by taxpayers,” he said that was precisely why the commission must remain impartial and unyielding.

“The opposition figures the ADC is trying to defend know in their hearts they have issues that necessitated our invitations. The only immunity against investigation is accountability and probity,” he declared.

He urged Nigerians to disregard politically charged statements designed to inflame tensions and distract from the “pillage of the national treasury.”
