Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), has paid a glowing tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a “brother, friend, and patriot” whose life symbolized Nigeria’s complex journey from military governance to democratic stability.

In a heartfelt statement released from his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Babangida expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Buhari, who died earlier today at the age of 81. The two men shared a long and eventful history, dating back to their enrollment at the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna in 1962.

“Our paths crossed in 1962 when we both joined the Nigerian Military Training College,” Babangida recalled. “From those early days, Muhammadu stood out — quiet yet resolute, principled yet humble, deeply patriotic and fiercely loyal to Nigeria.”

He went on to recount the trials, triumphs, and transitions they shared — as young officers, as Heads of State under different political circumstances, and eventually as elder statesmen who remained influential voices in national discourse.

“Even when we disagreed — as brothers often do — I never doubted his sincerity or his patriotism,” Babangida noted. “He served Nigeria with a deep sense of responsibility and unwavering commitment, even when the road was lonely or misunderstood.”

Describing Buhari as a spiritual man who carried himself with humility and a sense of higher calling, Babangida stressed that the former President’s legacy would endure beyond his years in office. He portrayed Buhari as more than a political figure — “a moral compass to many and an example of modesty in public life.”

The former military ruler extended his condolences to the late President’s widow, Aisha Buhari, his children and grandchildren, and the entire nation.

“May Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, accept his deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” Babangida prayed.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. His death marks the end of a remarkable era in Nigeria’s political and military history.

National mourning has begun, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum and international community. Flags are expected to fly at half-mast as the nation prepares for a state burial.
