“Where Did You Learn It, You Speak English So Well?” Trump Asks Liberian President
U.S. President Donald Trump raised eyebrows during a meeting with African leaders on Wednesday, July 7, after complimenting Liberian President Joseph Boakai on his English-speaking skills.
The exchange took place at the White House as President Boakai addressed the gathering, expressing appreciation for the long-standing relationship between Liberia and the United States.
“Liberia is a longtime friend of the United States, and we believe in your policy of making America great again. We just want to thank you so much for this opportunity,” Boakai said before advocating for increased U.S. investment in Liberia.
Impressed by Boakai’s fluent English, Trump asked:
“Such good English. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?”
Boakai chuckled and replied, “In Liberia, sir.”
Trump responded with surprise, saying:
“That’s very interesting. I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.”
Liberia, founded in 1822 as a colony for freed Black Americans, has English as its official language, though several Indigenous languages are also spoken.
