Afenifere Applauds Tinubu’s Appointment of Hon. Kayode Oladele As Acting Chairman, Federal Character Commission

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has expressed strong support for the appointment of Hon. Kayode Oladele as the Acting Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

In a press statement signed by its National Organising Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, Afenifere described Oladele as a “detribalised Nigerian and social crusader of impeccable character,” applauding his lifelong dedication to justice, equity, and national unity.

The group recalled Oladele’s vital contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, particularly during the military era. He was an active participant in the June 12 struggle and a member of key pro-democracy movements including Afenifere, the Campaign for Democracy (CD), and the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). According to Afenifere, Oladele’s involvement in these movements and his sacrifices for the restoration of democratic governance established him as a patriot with a firm moral compass and a proven commitment to national development.

Afenifere also commended his legislative achievements during his tenure in the House of Representatives. Notably, Oladele introduced and co-sponsored the Public Holiday Amendment Act, which officially shifted Nigeria’s Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 in honour of the late Chief MKO Abiola. He also sponsored the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) Act, which created a central body to manage financial intelligence gathering in the country—legislation that was eventually signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Within Afenifere, he is recognized as a committed member whose contributions continue to resonate with the group’s vision for a just and equitable Nigeria,” the statement read.

The group expressed full confidence in Oladele’s ability to lead the Federal Character Commission, citing his competence, experience, and unwavering integrity.

“As one of us, we have unflinching confidence in Oladele’s demonstrable competence, experience, and integrity to deliver on the new mandate,” Afenifere affirmed.
