Nigerian Doctor Who Supplied Addicts And Dealers with Painkillers Sentenced To 18 Years in U.S.

Dr. Ndubuisi Joseph Okafor, 65, has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for illegally distributing powerful prescription drugs from his Washington-based medical clinic, in a case authorities described as a clear example of a licensed professional fueling the opioid crisis.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the sentencing on Friday, after a federal jury on March 21, 2025, found the Maryland-based physician guilty of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances outside the scope of medical practice, operating a drug-involved premises, and 22 counts of unlawful distribution of drugs, including oxycodone and promethazine with codeine.

Evidence presented at trial revealed that between May 2021 and April 2023, Okafor operated Okafor Medical Associates, a solo internal medicine practice in Northwest Washington, D.C. During that time, he routinely wrote prescriptions for highly addictive opioids in exchange for cash, with no legitimate medical justification.

According to investigators, the clinic served as a “pill mill,” and Okafor’s prescriptions were frequently tied to individuals involved in drug trafficking operations across the country. His operation drew the attention of the FBI, the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), and the U.S. Attorney’s Office after law enforcement nationwide flagged his prescription patterns.

In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge John D. Bates ordered Okafor to serve three years of supervised release following his sentence. The court also directed him to forfeit $213,173.97—funds traced to proceeds from his illegal activities.

Federal officials said the case highlights the serious consequences for medical professionals who exploit their authority to profit from addiction and worsen the public health crisis.
