A major security breakthrough has been recorded in Kogi West as 26 suspected kidnappers were arrested during a sweeping raid on criminal hideouts by a joint team of security operatives and the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).

The suspects were paraded on Tuesday in Odo-Ape, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, by the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (Rtd.), who described the arrests as a critical step in restoring peace to Okunland.

According to Omodara, the two-week-long operation was launched to dislodge armed gangs that have been terrorizing communities in the area. He noted that among those arrested were individuals who provided logistics, food, and other supplies to the kidnappers.

“Not only were armed kidnappers arrested deep inside our forests, but even some local collaborators—those who have been supplying them with food, drinks, and other logistics—have also been caught,” he said.

He revealed that 16 of the suspects, including some from Zamfara State, were captured in Bunu forest. Several of them have already been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation.

Traditional ruler of Aiyegunle-Igun Bunu, Oba Sunday Omodamori, praised the operation’s success and expressed disappointment over a recent protest in the area, calling it “ill-timed” and “misleading.”

“These bandits came from as far as Kebbi and Zamfara, travelling through Niger State to infiltrate our forests. The State Government and our local hunters have stepped up to the challenge,” the monarch said.

Oba Omodamori called on residents to stand united and expose any individuals collaborating with criminal groups.

Also speaking, the Youth Leader of Aiyegunle-Igun, Ojo Olayinka, distanced his community from the recent protest, saying it was staged by external elements and did not reflect the position of the people.

“Things have changed. While kidnappings used to be rampant, we are now seeing clear results from the government’s actions. Okunland is beginning to breathe again,” he said.

He urged residents to continue supporting Governor Usman Ododo’s administration, local hunters, and security operatives to secure lasting peace.

“This is the time for unity. We must all support the security teams and expose those among us who are working with the enemy,” Olayinka added.

The cleanup operation is regarded as one of the most coordinated efforts in recent times and has renewed hope for sustained safety and security in Okunland.
