The family of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who tragically died in Ghana during a boxing match, is calling for justice and compensation as they continue to mourn his untimely death.

Over two months since the incident, Olanrewaju’s body still remains in Ghana, awaiting repatriation.

According to eyewitness accounts, Olanrewaju collapsed in the ring mid-bout and, despite prompt medical intervention, he could not be revived. The tragic event has sparked outrage and deep concern within Nigeria’s boxing community and beyond, highlighting the safety risks faced by Nigerian athletes competing abroad.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has intervened in the case and is actively working with the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana to ensure the matter is resolved.

“The Nigerian Embassy in Ghana is handling the situation. All issues surrounding the case are being addressed, and his remains will soon be repatriated. Efforts are also underway to secure compensation for the bereaved family,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

As the family awaits the return of Olanrewaju’s body for a proper burial, they are also demanding accountability and answers regarding the circumstances of his death.

The incident has reignited discussions about the safety and welfare of Nigerian sports professionals competing internationally. The Nigerian government, through its diplomatic channels, is committed to ensuring Olanrewaju’s family receives both justice and the necessary support during this difficult time.
