A 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, tragically lost his life on Tuesday morning during a joint traffic enforcement operation by officers of the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) in Ibadan.

According to an official statement released by the police, the incident occurred at around 7:45 AM near the Airport Roundabout along Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road, Egbeda Local Government Area. The boy was fatally struck by a bullet during a police attempt to stop his father’s vehicle, which was allegedly driving against the flow of traffic.

The vehicle, a black Honda Accord with Lagos registration number FST 639 JJ, was being driven by the boy’s father, Odunayo Alade. Police report that when enforcement officers tried to stop him, Alade refused to comply and instead accelerated, ramming into two OYTMA vehicles and a police patrol truck in an apparent attempt to escape.

Officers set up barricades to halt the vehicle, but the driver reportedly breached them, continuing to flee in a dangerous manner. Suspecting a possible abduction or more serious crime due to the erratic behavior, a police pursuit was initiated.

In an attempt to immobilize the vehicle, a police corporal discharged his firearm, aiming at the car’s tyres. Tragically, the bullet missed and struck Kehinde, who was seated in the backseat. He was immediately taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

His remains have been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

In response to the incident, Commissioner of Police CP Johnson Adenola deployed tactical and intelligence teams to the area to prevent unrest. The officer responsible for the shooting has been taken into custody and is cooperating with an investigation now underway, led by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The police command has expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that the investigation will be transparent, with findings to be made public
