Federal Ministry of Health Warns Nigerians Against Excessive Salt Intake After Pastor Oyakhilome’ Viral Video

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a strong warning to Nigerians to avoid excessive consumption of salt, following the circulation of a viral video in which popular televangelist, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, appeared to encourage higher salt intake.
In the video, which has sparked widespread debate on social media, Pastor Oyakhilome was seen speaking to a congregation where he suggested that increasing salt consumption could have health benefits. This statement contradicts established medical advice and has raised concern among public health experts.
In response, the Federal Ministry of Health released an official statement urging Nigerians to disregard any guidance that promotes high salt intake, citing serious health risks such as high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.
“The Ministry strongly advises the general public to limit their daily salt intake in accordance with guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO),” the statement read. “Excessive salt consumption is a major contributor to non-communicable diseases, particularly hypertension, which is highly prevalent in Nigeria.”
The Ministry also emphasized the importance of relying on evidence-based medical advice, especially when it concerns dietary habits and chronic disease prevention. “Religious leaders and public figures are urged to be cautious about the health-related advice they give to followers, as misinformation can have far-reaching and dangerous consequences,” it added.
Medical professionals across the country have also weighed in. Dr. Folashade Ogunbiyi, a cardiologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, stressed the dangers of misleading health messages. “We are already battling a high burden of hypertension in Nigeria. Encouraging more salt intake, without medical basis, could worsen an already alarming situation,” she said.
As of the time of reporting, Pastor Oyakhilome has not issued a formal clarification or retraction regarding the viral video.
The Federal Ministry of Health reaffirmed its commitment to public health and pledged to continue sensitizing Nigerians on the importance of healthy living and nutrition.
Nigerians are encouraged to consume less than 5 grams of salt per day—the equivalent of about one teaspoon—per WHO recommendations, and to seek medical guidance before making significant dietary changes.
