Justice Olusola Adetujoye of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan, on Monday, April 28, 2025, sentenced Olaniyan Gbenga Amos to 63 years in prison for masterminding multiple fraudulent investment schemes that duped unsuspecting Nigerians out of over N1 billion.

Amos, alongside his firm, Detorrid Heritage Investment Limited, was convicted on a 30-count charge filed by the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges centered on obtaining money under false pretenses, offences contrary to Section 1(1)(a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 2006.

In one charge, Amos was accused of obtaining N995,000 from a victim, Bada Titilope, under the guise of investing the sum with Crime Alert Security Network, promising a 30% return in just six weeks—a promise the court ruled was knowingly false.

In another instance, he defrauded Onifade Isaac Olawale of N920,000 under similar false promises. Despite pleading not guilty, Amos was eventually found culpable after a lengthy trial involving eight EFCC witnesses and multiple exhibits.

The prosecution began its case in February 2022 and concluded in January 2023. The defendant’s attempt to halt the case with a “no case submission” was dismissed, forcing him to open his defense in October 2024. The trial concluded with final addresses and the judgment delivered on April 28, 2025.

Justice Adetujoye sentenced Amos to seven years imprisonment on each of nine counts (6, 16–19, and 21–24), while discharging him on the remaining 21 counts. The sentences are to run concurrently, resulting in a total of 63 years, and the court also ordered restitution to all victims.

This is not Amos’ first conviction. He was previously sentenced to 75 years imprisonment on December 14, 2023, by Justice Bayo Taiwo of the same court for a similar scam. He currently faces two more trials at the Federal High Court in Ibadan for related offences.

Olaniyan Gbenga Amos, once a self-styled investment mogul, now stands as a chilling example of Nigeria’s deepening fight against financial fraud.
