NiMet Workers Suspend Nationwide Strike After Government Intervention

Published

on

Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have suspended their indefinite nationwide strike following a resolution meeting with the Federal Government.

The strike, which began on Wednesday, had severely disrupted flight operations across the country by Thursday, forcing major airlines like Air Peace to suspend services due to the unavailability of critical weather information, including QNH reports necessary for safe aircraft landings.

NiMet employees launched the industrial action in protest against poor working conditions and unresolved welfare issues. Among their demands were the payment of outstanding allowances, implementation of agreed financial entitlements, and the inclusion of previously omitted staff in wage awards linked to the 2019 minimum wage.

The workers also accused NiMet’s management of withholding key documents, neglecting staff training, and prioritizing executive retreats over pressing staff development needs.

However, following a meeting with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the unions agreed to suspend the strike, allowing normal operations to resume.

Flight services are expected to gradually return to normal as NiMet staff resume duties nationwide.
