BREAKING: Finnish Court Orders Extradition Of Simon Ekpa To Nigeria On Terrorism Charges

In a landmark decision with significant geopolitical ramifications, a Finnish court has approved the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian separatist leader, to Nigeria to face multiple charges including terrorism and incitement to violence.

The ruling, delivered by the Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti on April 18, 2025, paves the way for Ekpa’s transfer to Nigerian custody on July 15. The move ends months of legal deliberation and follows a comprehensive investigation by Finnish authorities, who arrested Ekpa in November 2024.

Ekpa, who heads a self-proclaimed “Autopilot” separatist movement and styles himself as the “Prime Minister” of a so-called Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, has been linked to a violent network accused of kidnappings, assassinations, and coordinated attacks across southeastern Nigeria. He is not affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which has repeatedly distanced itself from his activities.

“Simon Ekpa runs a rogue operation unconnected to the true Biafran cause,” an IPOB spokesperson stated, warning that misrepresenting his affiliation undermines legitimate non-violent advocacy efforts.

The Finnish court’s decision marks a rare exception to Finland’s strict extradition norms, made possible by a bilateral legal framework under the Rome Statute. Nigerian officials welcomed the ruling, calling it a “victory for justice and rule of law.”

Ekpa’s trial in Nigeria is expected to draw intense scrutiny from both domestic and international observers.
