A Chinese national at the center of a viral video involving Nigerian Mobile Police (MOPOL) officers in Kaduna has issued an official statement to clarify the incident and apologize for the misunderstanding it has caused.

The video, which rapidly gained traction on various social media platforms, showed members of a Chinese delegation interacting with armed Nigerian police officers. The footage raised concerns and speculation among viewers, with some interpreting the interaction as a possible act of bribery or misconduct.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by Mr. Jiang, one of the individuals featured in the video, the Chinese delegation firmly denied any allegations of wrongdoing. According to the statement, no bribe was offered or requested during the interaction, and the delegation emphasized that the engagement was entirely above board.

“In light of the viral video circulating on social media, showing some of our delegates interacting with Nigerian Mobile Police officers in Kaduna, we would like to address the issue amicably,” the statement read. “The way the video has been interpreted has unfortunately led to serious misunderstandings.”

Mr. Jiang explained that the interaction was a gesture of appreciation, grounded in cultural norms rather than any form of illicit transaction.

“No money was given on any demand or request. There was no bribe or illegal exchange,” the statement continued. “It was a friendly and open interaction, done in good faith to appreciate the officers’ professionalism — nothing secretive or inappropriate occurred.”

He further explained that expressing gratitude is a customary practice in Chinese culture. “Where we come from, it is common to show appreciation to individuals who perform their duties respectfully and effectively,” he said. “That was the spirit behind the gesture — a simple act of kindness, not a payoff.”

The statement concluded with a sincere apology for the confusion and public concern the video may have caused, reaffirming the delegation’s ongoing commitment to Nigeria and its people.

“We are truly sorry about how this situation unfolded. Despite this experience, we remain dedicated to our positive relationship with Nigeria.”
