In a swift response to mounting public outrage, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has summoned officers from the 1 Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) in Kaduna following the emergence of a viral video showing them allegedly collecting cash from a group of Chinese nationals.

The officer at the center of the scandal, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Aliyu Adejembi, who serves as the Provost of the MOPOL unit, along with his team members, has been ordered to report immediately to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for questioning and internal disciplinary review.

The short but damning footage, which surfaced online over the weekend, shows DSP Adejembi and his subordinates accepting cash gifts from foreign workers at what appears to be a construction or mining site operated by Chinese nationals. The incident, captured covertly and circulated widely on social media, has sparked a fierce backlash from Nigerians demanding accountability.

Public Outrage and Institutional Response

Human rights groups and civil society organizations have decried the video, describing it as a shameful display of corruption and a threat to Nigeria’s integrity in managing foreign relations and law enforcement professionalism. Many online commentators argue that the image of armed officers accepting handouts from foreign nationals raises serious concerns about extortion, abuse of power, and compromised national security.

Responding to the viral footage, the IGP, through Force Public Relations Officer ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, issued a strong statement condemning the act and promising a thorough investigation.

“The Nigeria Police Force views this development with the utmost seriousness. Any officer found culpable in compromising the integrity of the Force or engaging in unprofessional conduct will face the full weight of internal disciplinary measures,” the statement read.

IGP Egbetokun has further directed the Police Provost Unit and the IGP Monitoring Unit to launch an internal inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
