Renowned former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has passed away at the age of 74. He died earlier today, though details surrounding his death remain unclear at the time of filing this report.

The sad news was confirmed by his former teammate and colleague, Chief Segun Odegbami, in a heartfelt statement released this morning.

Odegbami wrote:

“My Chairman has passed on.
This morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR — my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, former captain and coach of Nigeria’s national team — has passed on.”

In 2021, rumours of Chukwu’s death had gone viral, prompting the legendary coach to debunk the reports during his 70th birthday celebration on January 4.

Reacting at the time, Chukwu said:

“I am terribly embarrassed by this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke. I am still investigating the source of the story.”

Fondly known as “Chairman,” Chukwu was a towering figure in Nigerian football, admired for his exceptional contributions both on the field as a player and on the sidelines as a coach. His legacy in Nigerian sports remains indelible.
