The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Lagos Chapter, on Saturday called for sustainable systems that empower women, foster inclusion and create opportunities for them to thrive.
Its Chairperson, Dr Atinuke Owolabi, made the call during an online public lecture to commemorate the 2025 International Women’s Day.
The theme for the event, organised by APWEN, Lagos Chapter was “For All women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment and Growth”.
Owolabi said that the theme aligned with the association’s mission and called for collaboration toward concrete actions that drive real change.
According to her, such change will help to build a world where every woman and girl can not only dream but also achieve their full potential and assume leadership roles.
“Achieving gender equality goes beyond breaking barriers. It requires us to build sustainable systems that empower women, foster inclusion, and create opportunities for them to thrive, particularly in STEM fields.
“As engineers, professionals, and advocates, we have a responsibility to pave the way for future generations by equipping women with the necessary skills, mentorship, and platforms to excel.
“To this end, APWEN Lagos has introduced several impactful initiatives, including: Reverse Mentorship, where young professionals bring fresh perspectives and digital expertise to senior engineers, fostering mutual learning,” she said.
She listed previous and upcoming programmes of the association aimed at empowerment of both young and older generation of female engineers.
She said the association was establishing an innovation hub for learning and technological advancement in line with its commitment to women’s empowerment.
“This hub will provide hands-on training, mentorship, and resources that will make our girls and women globally competitive and give them an upper edge in their fields,” she said.
The guest speaker, Duchess Dolapo Okulaja-Kotun, spoke about capacity building and the need for women to collaborate, mentor and support each other while ensuring family cohesion.
Okulaja-Kotun, who is the Executive Director, Ikwe-Onna Refinery Ltd., explained how women could be resilient to achieve their goals.
Mr Kunle Adebajo, Arup Nigeria’s Country Director said women are just as good as men and should occupy important leadership roles.
While encouraging women to aspire to be better versions of themselves, he said, “don’t allow yourselves to be intimidated in any way”.
