The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Lagos Chapter, has called on government agencies, industry leaders and corporate organisations to invest in female engineers for rapid national development.
The association’s chairperson, Dr Atinuke Owolabi, made the call in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos to commemorate the 2025 World Engineering Day (WED).
Owolabi, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) urged the stakeholders to support the empowerment initiatives through funding for training, mentorship, and industry placements for female engineers.
“We also advocate for policies that enhance the employability and competitiveness of female engineering graduates.
“By bridging the gender gap in engineering (SDG 5 – Gender Equality) and fostering innovation (SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), we can unlock the full potential of engineering to drive sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.
“At APWENLagos, we remain dedicated to empowering female engineers, promoting sustainable solutions, and ensuring that women engineers in Lagos actively shape the future.
“Together, let’s harness the power of engineering to build a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous world,” she said.
The award-winning engineer, who doubles as a politician, and educationist, highlighted APWEN’s advocacy efforts for women in engineering, STEM mentorship, and leading innovations toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She announced the upcoming launch of a five-week hands-on training program on Electrical Wiring Installation and Solar Technology, aimed at equipping students and both young and experienced engineers with skills to contribute to Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
According to her, the 2025 WED with the theme, “Shaping Our Sustainable Future Through Engineering,” underscores the vital role engineers play in addressing global challenges.
“At APWEN Lagos, we are committed to empowering female engineers with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to drive innovation, sustainability and national development.
“At APWEN Lagos, we believe that empowering female engineers is key to driving sustainable innovation.
“Our initiatives equip women with the skills and opportunities to transform industries and communities. By investing in female engineers, we are investing in a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous future,” she said.
She said her administration in the last one year had significantly advanced STEM education, mentorship, and hands-on training, inspiring the next generation of female engineers.
She added that the association had impacted over 1,000 girls in Lagos through its STEM and mentorship programmes, equipping them with the confidence and knowledge to pursue careers in engineering.
She reeled out achievements in pursuing SDGs including STEM advocacy and mentorship; cybersecurity and AI innovation; reverse mentorship; technical and sustainable engineering training, building projects, among others
“In April 2025, APWENLagos will commission an Innovation Lab and Resource Hub at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Faculty of Engineering as part of Innovation Month.
“This center will serve as a hub for research, hands-on learning, and collaboration in renewable energy, digital manufacturing, AI, smart infrastructure, and sustainable engineering solutions,” she said.
She also explained interventions of the association in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Primary Place of Assignment (PPA) in Lagos State to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice.
She advised government to establish a dedicated Engineering Community Development Service group within NYSC, while announcing an upcoming event for Corp members in April.
“To foster creativity and excellence, APWENLagos has designated April as “Innovation Month.” This will feature competitions, scholarship awards, and capacity-building programmes for female engineers, encouraging groundbreaking ideas and rewarding engineering excellence,” she said. (NAN).
