The Director/Principal, Queen’s College, Lagos, Dr (Mrs) Onyidamola Adetutu Obabori says  the ability of the college to find joy in the midst of difficulties, is a testament to its  unbreakable spirit.
Dr Obabori stated this at the institution’s maiden end of year concert, 2024, on Tuesday in Lagos.
According to her, optimism remains a mindset that propels people to move on in a bid to achieve greater heights, irrespective of barriers.
She explained that optimism was not just a mindset, but rather, a force.
“When you face life with an open heart and a positive outlook, you invite opportunities, growth and abundance into your life.
“With a grateful heart and a spirit filled with joy, I warmly welcome you all to this historic moment in the Queen’s College community.
“Today, we gather not just to sing, but to lift our voices and spirits in thanksgiving and praise to God Almighty, who has been our guide and sustainer through the journey of the year.
“Last session, in a bid to have more activities to engage the girls, while building in them the spirit of originality, we decided to introduce a ‘Skills Acquisition Program’.
“We hoped to achieve the objectives of arresting our queens  restiveness, while fostering resilience in them and harnessing their energy into some form of creativity,” she stated.
Dr Obabori stated that the college did this by selecting some simple crafts and skills that young girls should enjoy and which could improve their self worth and help them break out of the box.
She listed the skills to include but not limited to music; playing of different musical instruments, perfumery, painting and paint production, snacks making, sequencing and beading and photography.
Also included are decoration, knitting and crotcheting, hat, turban and fascinator making, as well as video editing and electronics, which were added last term.
“Today, we are gathered to showcase some of our handiwork, even as we have fun praising God, who brought us this far, despite the challenges we have encountered.
“We started on wobbly feet, but today, we are standing better and stronger, and I trust soon, we will be standing with pride in what we can achieve with a little effort and support,” she said.
The director/principal added that the concert, the first of its kind, was a fresh addition to the college’s cherished traditions.
“While our Christmas Carol Service has always been a highlight, today, we extend our gratitude beyond the carols, embracing a broader spirit of praise and thanksgiving.
“Let us, with humble hearts and unwavering optimism, blend our voices with those of these bright young souls, ‘the future of our nation’ and the world, as we give glory to God.
Speaking further, the principal reminded the students of the essence of being focused, hardwork, perseverance, determination and resilience.
“I challenge each of you to carry this spirit of praise beyond the school premises. Gratitude and positivity are not seasonal, they are habits we must practice every day.
“Be grateful for your teachers, your friends, your family and even those moments of struggle, because they are shaping you into the resilient queens  you are destined to be.
“Let me share an African proverb: “Rain beats a leopard’s skin, but it does not wash out the spots,”. We may face challenges, but our essence, our faith, and our spirit remain untouched.
“Today, let us pour our hearts into every song, every note, and every word. Let the world know that Queens’ College is not just a school, it is a place where gratitude, optimism, and excellence thrive,” she stated.
Also speaking, Mrs Adama  Mohammad  an Assistant Director, National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) Lagos, who was guest at the occasion said that  actions taken today may contribute a lot to how the future will be shaped.
She emphasised the benefits of skills acquisition by students, noting that it was the key driver of personal growth.
“At this point of your life, feel free to learn, experiment and experience different skills.
“Along the way and over time with consistency, you will find that you enjoy doing some particular task over and over again. By then, you would realize you have found what you love doing and can become a source of income.
“Like you have started training for already, You just need to keep practicing and be better at it in order to get the opportunities and benefits from it, hence the reason for today,” she stated.
According to her,  the National Business and Technical Examination Board, (NABTEB) offers students professional certifications for the skill-set they have acquired.
She added that NABTEB  had  been charged with the mandate of conducting business and technical examinations leading to the award of NTC, NBC, ANTC and ANTB.
“It also conducts other specified examinations on behalf of or in collaboration with other examination bodies or agencies.
“And with our certification, you have an added advantage and you standout in the midst of others, who are not certified in their skill.
“Our certifications are used for admission purpose, upward mobility in the work force and entrepreneurship.
Overall, vocational skills empowers one for self reliance and wealth creation, while it improves productivity and sustainable development of the nation,  leading to job creation/employment for poverty alleviation.
“Every man, woman or child has infinite potencials just waiting to be tapped.
So, with that, I will leave you with this; Never stop learning, keep your head high and I will see you at the top,” she admonished.
The high point of the event was the display of various crafts by students of the college, which include colourful hats and fascinators, perfumes, beads, paints, snacks, as well as the flying of drones by the girls within the college premises, among others.
The hall which witnessed musical presentations  by both the Queen’s college  girls  and Igbobi College, was further thrown into a frenzy, with performance by two gospel artists,  Abbey Ola and Beejay Sax.
