Former Super Eagles Captain Henry Nwosu Dies At 62

Henry Nwosu MON, former captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles and a member of the historic 1980 African Cup of Nations-winning squad, has passed away. He died in the early hours of Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where he had been receiving intensive care.
Nwosu, who had been battling health challenges in recent years, was widely remembered as one of Nigeria’s footballing prodigies. He played for several clubs across Nigeria and West Africa, leaving a lasting impact on the domestic game.
His deteriorating condition drew public attention thanks to football legends Segun Odegbami and Bestman Jumbo. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu intervened, covering his medical expenses and providing accommodation to support him during his illness.
In an emotional tribute, Odegbami wrote: “After five days in hospital, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed away at 4:00 am. It is with deep pain that I convey the news of Henry Nwosu MON’s death. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven.”
Nwosu’s death marks the loss of a cherished figure in Nigerian football history, remembered for his leadership on the pitch and his role in bringing home Nigeria’s first AFCON trophy.
