Britain Tightens Security Ahead Of Tinubu’s State Visit To King Charles

Britain will tighten security in Windsor next week as Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrives for a state visit hosted by King Charles III. Authorities say the measures will include extended airspace restrictions and the deployment of armed police officers around the town.
The Nigerian president is expected to begin the visit on Wednesday, March 18, accompanied by his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, with a formal reception at Windsor Castle.
In a statement released Wednesday, Thames Valley Police said it is coordinating security arrangements with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household and other partners.
The police explained that the airspace restrictions already in place over Windsor Castle throughout the year will be extended on March 18, running from 7 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of the force’s Joint Operations Unit said the restrictions are only one part of a wider security plan for the high-profile visit.

“The air restrictions are just one element of a robust security operation for President Tinubu’s state visit next week,” Hall said. “Some measures will be visible to the public, while others will not.”
He added that the police have considerable experience managing security during royal events in Windsor and that extensive planning has gone into preparing for the occasion.
Hall warned that authorities would strictly enforce the airspace rules. Any breach, he said, would amount to a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could lead to arrest.

To secure the area, officers with specialist skills — including search teams, mounted police, road policing units and armed officers — will be deployed across Windsor. Neighbourhood policing teams and Project Servator officers will also be on the ground interacting with residents and visitors.
Security officials will also rely on Windsor’s extensive CCTV network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers and other protective measures, some of which will not be visible to the public.
Hall urged residents and visitors to remain alert and support the operation by reporting anything suspicious.

“The public plays a vital role in helping us keep people safe,” he said. “If you notice anything unusual, report it by calling 101 or speaking to an officer. In an emergency, call 999.”
Meanwhile, road closures and parking restrictions will begin on Tuesday, March 17, and motorists should expect temporary disruptions in and around Windsor during the visit.
According to Thames Valley Police, the airspace restrictions will be enforced with support from the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services. Anyone with a legitimate reason to fly a drone during the restricted period has been advised to apply in advance through the police.
