Youths Group Urges Tinubu To Assent To Police Pension Board Bill

Youths in Politics (YIP), a non-profit youth pressure group, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to assent to the bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Police Force Pension Board.
The proposed board, according to the group, will administer police pensions independently and remove police personnel from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The President of YIP and Ambassador to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Mr Micheal Nwabufo, made the appeal at a news conference in Ikeja, Lagos on Monday.
Nwabufo, a talent and brand manager, popularly known as Mike Premium, said the bill, when signed into law, would address long-standing welfare concerns affecting officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
“We are here pleading with President Bola Tinubu to sign the Police Pension Board Bill as urgently as possible.
“We are at the forefront of advocating institutional reforms for the growth and development of the country. We believe strongly that the signing of the bill will impact positively on the police as an institution.
“We have noticed the urgent need for improved welfare and post-service security for police officers.
“Many of them dedicate up to 35 years of their lives to serving the nation under extremely demanding and sometimes hazardous conditions,” Nwabufo said.
According to him, despite their sacrifices, a significant number of retired officers struggle with inadequate financial stability and unreliable support systems.
“This reality is deeply concerning, particularly when viewed against the already modest compensation structure within the force,” he said.
Nwabufo explained that prolonged service under difficult circumstances, combined with uncertainty about life after retirement, could negatively affect morale within the force.
He added that when officers feel financially secure and institutionally valued, their professionalism, conduct and engagement with citizens were more likely to improve.
The YIP President expressed optimism that the signing and effective implementation of the Police Pension Board Bill would represent a significant turning point for the policing system.
He said the legislation would foster greater motivation, institutional confidence and improved service delivery to Nigerians.
Nwabufo emphasised that strengthening police welfare structures was not merely a benefit to officers alone, but a strategic investment in national security, public trust and overall societal stability.
He urged the President to give prompt assent to the bill in the interest of justice, equity and sustainable reform within the policing system.
Also speaking, the Vice President of the group, Ms Rahmah Zakareeyay, said that the welfare of police personnel should be prioritised.
“They are also humans. The mental health of police officers should be prioritised,” she said.
Speaking further, Nwabufo, who is also the National President of the Practitioners of Content Creators, Skit-Makers and Influencers Guild of Nigeria (PCCSIGN), urged citizens to refrain from speaking negatively about the country.
According to him, the leadership of any nation is a reflection of its society, adding that many of those criticising leaders might not perform better if given the opportunity.
“It is time for us to build our country. Whatever we are facing in public offices and policing are reflections of the society.
“The youths must be involved instead of complaining. We should stop abusing and cursing our nation.
“We should stop speaking evil of the land where we live and have our being.
“Stop cursing Nigeria. Let us put our hands together to make the country work,” he said.
He also urged public office holders to shun corruption, greed and materialism, saying that Nigeria’s wealth had not benefited the majority of its citizens.
The bill, which seeks to exempt the police from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and establish an independent pension board, has been passed by the National Assembly and is awaiting presidential assent.
The bill is expected to be signed soon to ensure a dedicated pension management system for the police.
