BREAKING: RIBADU DEMANDS EVIDENCE FROM EL-RUFAI OVER TOXIC CHEMICAL CLAIM

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), headed by Nuhu Ribadu, has formally directed former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to submit evidence backing his allegation concerning the procurement of thallium sulphate to the Department of State Services for investigation.
The development follows claims reportedly made by El-Rufai alleging that thallium sulphate—a highly toxic, colourless and odourless chemical compound—was procured under suspicious circumstances. The substance is known for its extreme toxicity and has historically been associated with poisoning cases due to its ability to cause severe organ damage and death even in small doses.
In a statement issued on Sunday, ONSA described the allegation as serious and with grave national security implications, stressing that any claim involving the acquisition or potential misuse of hazardous substances must be thoroughly investigated.
“The Office of the National Security Adviser has taken note of the allegation regarding the procurement of thallium sulphate. Given the gravity of such a claim, the individual who made the assertion is required to provide credible evidence to the appropriate security authorities,” the statement said.
ONSA directed that any supporting documents, intelligence, or relevant materials in El-Rufai’s possession be forwarded to the Department of State Services to enable a comprehensive and professional investigation.
Security analysts note that thallium compounds are strictly regulated globally due to their lethal properties. Thallium sulphate was historically used in rodenticides but has since been banned or heavily restricted in many countries because of safety concerns.
As of press time, El-Rufai had not publicly responded to the directive.
The unfolding exchange adds a new layer of tension to the ongoing political discourse between key figures in Nigeria’s security and political establishment. Observers say the matter could test both the credibility of the allegation and the robustness of institutional mechanisms for handling claims involving national security threats.
Further developments are expected as security agencies review any evidence that may be submitted.
