The Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, Ogun State was on Thursday formally handed over to the Federal Government by the Ogun State Government.
Performing the handing over, the Ogun State Government, represented by the state Governor, Prince (Dr) Dapo Abiodun thanked the administration of President Bola Tinubu for taking over the University and for his passion for the development of education in the country.
President Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’Idu Ahmad, said that the administration recognised the trajectory of the University from a state university to a federal university.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the handing over took place during the 17th Convocation of the University, where a total of 4717 students graduated with first degree with 40 students obtaining First Class Degrees.
Tinubu added that the symbolic event is a product of the Renewed Hope Agenda of our administration, and promised that his government would continue to promote education.
The President then urged the graduands to be good ambassadors of the institution.
“Your certificates symbolize discipline and commitment. So you must ensure that you show integrity and professionalism wherever you find yourselves.
“I acknowledge the contributions of the teaching and non teaching staff of the institution in ensuring that the students get the necessary trainings. Education is the center of our Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
In his address at the ceremony, Governor Dapo Abiodun said that the event is a historic and that it is an epochal event in the annals of the state and in the history of the university.
Governor Abiodun then commended the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa for “indeed working very hard and facilitating it,” highlighting that Ogun East finally has a federal university.
He said that the University was established to address gaps in pedagogy identified in conventional universities, particularly in teacher education.
“The University focuses on academic education alongside practical skills for self-reliance, and it is Nigeria’s first university of education.
“It grew from about 3,800 students and four colleges to six colleges today. This expansion reflects depth, intellectual ambition, and a clear affirmation of quality, discipline, and institutional integrity.
“The university advances with purpose, shaping minds that will define the nation’s future; its overarching achievement remains clear and purposeful.
“We wish to express our deep appreciation to the President for granting federal status to the University; which is renowned as a source of pride as a center of academic excellence.
“We celebrate with deep gratitude and national pride the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her service to women and vulnerable communities.
“We express our heartfelt congratulations to the graduates. They bear a unique responsibility to shape minds and are called to roles as nation-builders,” he said.
The Governor revealed that the state government allocated N275.4 billion to education this year, and commended the President for the Nigeria Education Youth Fund, saying that education remains his administration’s strongest legacy.
“To the graduands: “Go forth as ambassadors of knowledge, as ambassadors with service to humanity. We wish them continued success in the noble task of nation-building,” he said.
In his speech, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Adekunle Olanrewaju Adeogun, said that the 17th Convocation of the University was taking place at a defining moment in the life of the University, a moment when a dream planted in 2005 has grown into a mighty institutional tree whose shade now shelters the Nigerian nation through it’s formal adoption by the Federal Government.
“Your Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we are eternally grateful for your visionary leadership and for the historic pronouncement that transitioned TASUED to a federal university. Your “Renewed Hope” agenda continues to provide the necessary support for teacher education in Nigeria.
“Your Excellency, First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, your presence and continued advocacy for the empowerment of the Nigeria youth and the girl-child through education serve as a beacon of inspiration to our university.
“Your Excellency, the Governor of Ogun State, Prince (Dr) Dapo Abiodun, we thank you for your unwavering commitment to this institution during its years as a state university under your care and for the pivotal role you played in facilitating its smooth transition to a federal status.
“Your Excellency, Minister of Education, Dr Morufu Tunji Alausa, your leadership in the Ministry has been instrumental in fostering academic stability, as evidenced by the landmark 2025 agreements that will ensure a peaceful university environment. I thank you for your unwavering support on Public Private Partnership (PPP) hostel arrangement for our University. God bless you sir.
“Your Excellency, Chief Olusegun Osoba. As a founding father and elder statesman, your consistent support for the development of Ogun State and its educational assets remains deeply appreciated by this institution,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor then recognised all the past vice chancellors of the University from the pioneer VC, Professor Olukayode Oyekanmi Oyesiku to the last VC before him, Professor Oluwole Sikiru Banjo.
He commended Professor Banjo in particular, saying that “his commitment to staff and students welfare have left an indelible mark on the history of this premier university of education.”
The VC revealed that the University has solved the problem of graduate unemployment through pedagogical model that he said ensures that student leaves the walls of the university with only a degree, adding that “they leave with additional second certificate, a vocation in their heart and a skill in their fingers.”
“We do not just train people to teach; we train them to innovate. Our graduates are “Double-threats”: they can manage a classroom and manage a business simultaneously. This is the TASFUED success story and one of our selling points as the flagship of pedagogical excellence,” he said.
Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University, Professor Rahamon Bello, thanked President Bola Tinubu for the resolve to ignite the Renewed Hope Agenda through quality education.
He then thanked the members of the Governing Council of the university for their “dedication, co-operation and commitment to the University,” saying that the quality of the membership of the Council has enabled the smooth transition of the University from being state-owned to being a Federal Institution.
“I also wish to appreciate the Management of the University, ably led by the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwole Sikiru Banjo, whose tenure ended on November 1, 2025. Professor Banjo’s performance was acknowledged by all and sundry and was therefore widely celebrated.
“The mantle of leadership of the University has some fallen on Professor Adekunle O. Adeogun as the Acting Vice Chancellor, who is currently doing excellently well in ensuring that nothing goes amiss in the transition.
“The great strides that Nigeria is achieving in Education, particularly tertiary education, which are due to the deliberate efforts and will of Mr President must be acknowledged. We are witnessing the best of the times for tertiary education in Nigeria with alm the interventions ongoing.
“The master stroke is the recently signed agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which is aimed at achieving peace and development of the University system in Nigeria. We commend Mr President and plead that the agreements with the other staff unions in the University system; SSANU, NAAT and NASU, be urgently concluded to seal it up. Mr President, this is a legacy that will outlive you,” he said.
The event witnessed the presentation of honourary doctorate awards to the Nigerian First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, a former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba and Governor Dapo Abiodun.
