Abuja House Claim Is A Lie — Lagos Assembly Slams Election-Season Propaganda, Threatens Legal Action

The Lagos State House of Assembly has firmly dismissed as false and mischievous reports alleging that it budgeted funds to purchase houses in Abuja for its members in the 2026 Appropriation Law.
In a statement jointly signed by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman, House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, and Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, Chairman, House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, the Assembly described the claim as a deliberate fabrication designed to mislead the public and undermine confidence in democratic institutions.
“There is no provision whatsoever in the 2026 Budget for the purchase of houses in Abuja or anywhere else for members of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” the statement said. “The report is a complete falsehood, peddled by patently ignorant individuals for political mischief.”
The lawmakers stressed that the Lagos State House of Assembly does not operate in Abuja and has no constitutional or administrative basis to acquire residential properties for legislators outside Lagos State.
“Our responsibilities, constituencies, and legislative duties are entirely within Lagos State. It is illogical, irrational, and irresponsible to suggest that public funds would be appropriated for personal housing outside our jurisdiction,” the statement added.
The Assembly noted that the 2026 budget is already in the public domain and open to scrutiny by Lagosians and Nigerians, reaffirming the state’s long-standing commitment to transparency and accountable governance.
According to the statement, the rumour forms part of a broader pattern of election-season propaganda aimed at eroding public trust, sowing discord, and maligning democratic institutions.
The chairmen further clarified that the House of Assembly’s capital expenditure for 2026 constitutes less than 0.04 per cent of the state’s total capital expenditure, underscoring the legislature’s culture of prudence and fiscal responsibility. They added that, historically, the House often does not even access its full approved budget in many fiscal years.
Reaffirming the Assembly’s alignment with the 2026 Budget of Shared Prosperity, the lawmakers said the House remains committed to excellence, transparency, good governance, and the collective welfare of Lagos residents.
“We challenge those behind this harebrained allegation to produce credible evidence or retract their statements immediately,” the statement warned. “Failure to do so may attract appropriate legal action.”
The Assembly urged Lagosians and the general public to disregard the baseless claim and to always verify information through official and credible sources.
