Awujale Stool: We Won’t Accept Any Imposition, Says Sonny Kuku

The Awujale kingmakers in Ijebu-Ode have reaffirmed their resolve not to accept any form of imposition in the selection of the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
Olorogun Sonny Folorunso Kuku, Chairman of the Interregnum Council and Head of the Awujale Kingmakers, made this position known amid reports that the Ogun State Government had halted the selection process following petitions from some stakeholders and security agencies.
Speaking on the matter, Kuku said the kingmakers had not received any official communication from the government directing them to suspend the process. He noted, however, that the kingmakers were engaging with relevant authorities to address concerns raised and ensure that the process resumes smoothly.
According to him, a total of 95 applications were received for the Awujale stool, out of which six candidates completed and submitted all required documentation. He explained that the kingmakers are currently scrutinising the applications thoroughly to guarantee fairness, transparency, and adherence to tradition.
Kuku also addressed the heightened security presence around the Awujale’s palace, stressing that it should not be interpreted as an attempt to influence the selection process. He described the security measures as precautionary and unrelated to the kingmakers’ deliberations.
“The responsibility before us is a serious one,” he said. “Our actions are guided solely by the interest of peace and the need to select the best candidate for the throne. The decision we take will affect the Ijebu people for generations, and we are determined to get it right.”
The kingmakers, he added, remain committed to carrying out their traditional duties without external pressure, in line with the customs of Ijebuland and the collective interest of its people
