Tinubu Won’t Sacrifice Wike for Fubara — Fayose Warns Rivers Governor to Seek Peace Or Face Political Ruin

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not abandon Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in favour of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as efforts continue to resolve the deepening political crisis in Rivers State.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Fayose said President Tinubu places a premium on loyalty, political strength and influence, insisting that Wike’s standing within the president’s political calculations far outweighs that of Fubara.
“Let me say this clearly to Nigerians: the Asiwaju that I know will not get rid of a Wike for a Fubara,” Fayose said. “Wike came from Rivers to support President Tinubu. He is performing as FCT minister. We’ve never had it so good in Abuja— even a blind man can’t deny that.”
Fayose stressed that Wike’s political relevance transcends his current office, describing him as a formidable figure whose influence will remain significant even after leaving government. “You will always need Wike. Let me tell you the truth,” he said.
The former governor advised Fubara to urgently reconcile with Wike by honouring the political agreement they both signed, warning that continued defiance could be politically fatal.
“Governor Fubara, I’m begging you again: go and make certain amends and be at peace,” Fayose urged.
He also addressed the contentious issue of the “001” title in Rivers politics, cautioning Fubara against attempting to challenge Wike’s authority and political leadership.
“There is a difference between the office and 001. Who gave you the platform to call yourself 001? It is a sad narrative for Governor Fubara to be struggling. Rather, he should manage the situation,” Fayose said. “Even if Wike says he is the leader, it is not in the mouth of Fubara to contest it. We all know the truth.”
Fayose dismissed claims that Fubara had already apologised to Wike, noting that not all apologies reflect genuine remorse. He warned that those encouraging the governor to confront Wike would abandon him if impeachment succeeds.
“If Governor Fubara goes down today, they will run away. Those who told me to fight back in my time were nowhere to be found when I was isolated and alone,” Fayose said, drawing parallels with his own impeachment experience in 2006.
Reflecting on recent events, Fayose said the period of emergency rule ultimately favoured Fubara, arguing that impeachment would have effectively ended the governor’s political career.
“Once you are impeached, you are out. You can’t contest again,” he said, adding that President Tinubu had already demonstrated his political authority in the handling of the crisis.
“It is time for Governor Fubara to learn, the same way I learned after my first tenure,” Fayose said.
He concluded by urging Fubara to respect both constitutional provisions and political mentorship, calling on him to “climb down from his high horse” and seek reconciliation with Wike, whom he described as the political benefactor who paved the way for his emergence as governor.
The crisis escalated in December after Wike openly campaigned against Fubara’s re-election, accusing him of breaching their agreement following the lifting of emergency rule in Rivers State. Lawmakers loyal to Wike have since accused the governor of unauthorised spending, culminating in impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.
Fayose maintained that President Tinubu has a deep aversion to ingratitude and values loyalty above all, adding that Wike’s political influence remains vital to electoral success for the APC in both Rivers State and the FCT.
