Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State is set to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) today (Monday), a member of the state executive council has confirmed.
Speaking with The Nation on Sunday, the source said the governor has concluded wide-ranging consultations with stakeholders and the electorate ahead of the move, adding that the APC is already in a celebratory mood in anticipation of his formal reception.
The defection, initially scheduled for January 5, was postponed to allow for further consultations and to carry along more stakeholders, particularly members of the Kano State caucus in the National Assembly.
“Yes, of course, the governor is joining APC today, Monday, with all his NNPP supporters,” the source, who is a serving commissioner in the state cabinet, said.
Meanwhile, immediate past governor of Kano State and former National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, returned to Nigeria from Dubai on Sunday to participate in the defection ceremony.
The expected defection is seen as a major political development in Kano State and a significant boost for the APC ahead of future electoral contests.
