BREAKING: Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara, Deputy

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following allegations of gross misconduct.
At plenary on Thursday, 26 lawmakers signed and endorsed separate notices of impeachment against the governor and deputy governor, accusing them of actions said to be in violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to the notices, the allegations include the demolition of the House of Assembly complex, expenditure of public funds without legislative approval, withholding of statutory funds meant for the legislature, and failure to comply with judgments of the Supreme Court, among other constitutional breaches.
The lawmakers said the alleged actions amount to serious misconduct capable of undermining democratic governance and the rule of law in the state.
In line with Section 188 of the Constitution, the Assembly resolved that the misconduct notices be formally served on Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu within seven days, after which they are expected to respond to the allegations in writing.
If the process continues, the House may proceed to constitute an investigative panel, with a two-thirds majority required at critical stages for removal from office.
The development marks a major escalation in the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, which has been characterised by deep rifts between the executive and the legislature and persistent power struggles within the state’s political leadership.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the governor nor the deputy governor had issued an official response to the impeachment move.
