Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, will remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre as the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has adjourned ruling on his bail application to January 7, 2026.
The court also deferred its decision on the bail applications of Malami’s son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and Hajia Bashir Asabe, a staff member of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited.
Malami and his co-defendants were arraigned on December 30 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 16-count charge bordering on conspiracy, procuring, disguising, concealing, and laundering proceeds of unlawful activities, contrary to the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
At Friday’s proceedings, counsel to the defendants, Joseph Daudu, SAN, moved their written bail applications, while the prosecution, represented by Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, opposed the applications through a counter-affidavit.
The defence subsequently filed a further affidavit and a reply on points of law. However, when the prosecution requested additional time to respond to the fresh processes served on Friday, Daudu withdrew the further affidavit to avoid delays.
After listening to submissions from both sides, the presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, adjourned the matter to January 7, 2026, for ruling on the bail applications.
