OOLI, Response To Africa’s Urgent Need For Quality Leadership – Gen. Agwai (Rtd)

Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (Rtd.) Director and Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute (OOLI) in Ogun, has described the school as a response to Africa’s urgent need for quality leadership.
Agwai stated this at the maiden convocation and induction ceremony of the institute on Saturday, Dec. 13 in Abeokuta.
This is contained is a statement by the institute’s Media Consultant, Prof. Elvis Otobo, issued to newsmen on Sunday in Lagos.
He noted that the ceremony that had not less than 30 graduating students, championed a new era of transformative African leadership.
According to him, the institute was conceived as a nursery for grooming a new breed of leaders, as well as a centre for practical, innovative and experiential leadership training.
He added that it was a platform to catalyze development from the family unit to the global stage.
“This maiden convocation therefore marks a historic milestone in the institute’s mission to raise a new generation of ethical, visionary and development driven leaders, for Nigeria and Africa,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Deputy Chief Executive, of the institute, Prof. Samuel Daramola, assured that the OOLI would continue to collaborate with leading global institutions, to deliver world class, practice based leadership education.
Nigeria’s Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo congratulated the inductees and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to grooming leaders who would place national interest above personal gains.
He noted that leadership excellence was the core of OOLI’s vision.
Professor Elvis Otobo, a U.K. based media consultant commended the institute’s international faculty, describing President Obasanjo’s experiential insights into Africa’s leadership deficits, as a highlight of the programme.
Prof. Otobo noted the graduation of the students marked a new dawn for leadership development in Africa.
“The maiden convocation of OOLI signals the beginning of a long term continental project to redefine leadership culture in Africa.
“With its blend of global expertise, practical training, and ethical grounding, the institute aims to produce leaders capable of driving sustainable development, institutional reforms and national transformation,” he said.
Also speaking, Pastor Seun Aderibigbe
Senior Pastor, RCCG and Barrister-at-Law, lauded the quality of training offered at the institute and highlighted its innovative leadership programme for secondary school prefects.
According to him, this is an initiative he personally benefited from as a former Lagos State head boy.
He described OOLI as a continuation of President Obasanjo’s enduring legacy across generations.
On his part, Amb. Dr. Deji Bolusemihi,
Managing Director, Midfield Insurance Brokers Ltd commended the facilitators and stressed that the OOLI’s curriculum promoted a new model of Afrodemocracy, tailored to Africa’s developmental realities.
He encouraged corporate organisations to adopt OOLI’s programmes for leadership renewal.
Also contributing, some of the graduands lauded the OOLI’s transformative Impact, as they also shared their experiences, while praising the curriculum, faculty and the institute’s vision.
Earlier In his keynote lecture, Prof. Banji Oyelaran Oyeyinka, Senior Special Adviser on Industrialisation to the African Development Bank Group,delivered a compelling and data rich analysis of Nigeria’s leadership challenges and the urgent need for a new leadership ethos.

The lecture is titled: Leadership and Economic Development; A Call for Visionary, Ethical and Competent Leadership.
He stressed that leadership determined the social, political and economic trajectory of nations.
According to him, vision, strategic planning, merit based appointments, crisis management and integrity are non negotiable qualities for national transformation.
“Nigeria’s development has been hindered by a persistent ‘vision–execution gap’, weak institutions, predatory governance and the resource curse.
Countries such as Singapore, South Korea, Rwanda, Vietnam and China demonstrate how disciplined leadership and industrial policy can transform nations within decades,” he said.
He then urged Nigeria to embrace value based recruitment, strengthen institutions, industrialise agriculture and invest heavily in human capital.
Oyeyinka also recommended that OOLI established a ‘Nigerian Youth Leadership Academy’ to nurture future leaders grounded in ethics, policy competence, and national service.
