BREAKING : 16 Rivers Lawmakers, Speaker Amaewhule Dump PDP For APC

Sixteen members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, have formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signalling a major political earthquake in the state.

The announcement was made during Friday’s plenary session, where Speaker Amaewhule read a collective letter indicating the lawmakers’ decision to abandon the PDP. He attributed the move to what he called a “clear division and irreconcilable cracks” within the party’s structure both at the state and national levels.

According to Amaewhule, the lawmakers could no longer remain in a party plagued by internal conflict, factional leadership struggles, and what they described as a lack of direction. “Our people deserve stability, purposeful representation, and alignment with a platform capable of delivering governance,” he said.

The mass defection represents a dramatic shift in the political landscape of Rivers. It also strengthens the APC’s influence in the state, giving the party a significant advantage in legislative dynamics and future electoral calculations.

Both the PDP and APC are expected to issue official statements in response to the  announcement.
