A former Executive Secretary of the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission (LAHASCOM), Chief (Mrs.) Lambo Abosede has counseled freshers in universities across Nigeria on the need to hone their skills towards being economically independent and self-reliant, while in school.

Chief Lambo, an astute communicator, made the assertion in her speech at the maiden edition of the 2025 edition of Freshers Induction Summit with the theme: “Striking Balance Beyond the Classroom,” held inside Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo on Monday.

The event, put together by the 36th Vice President of the Lagos State University Student Union (LASUSU), Comrade Moyosoluwa Abisuga, witnessed a massive turnout of students, especially those in 100 level across all faculties.

Lambo, in her speech, said that, “Organizing an induction summit that focuses on guiding freshers towards balancing academics, leadership, and personal growth is no mean feat—it’s a vital contribution to shaping the LASU experience for these new students.

“This summit is more than just an orientation—it’s your launch pad into a world of opportunities, challenges, and growth. ‘Striking Balance Beyond the Classroom’ is a reminder that university life is about more than just lectures and textbooks.

“It’s about discovering your passions, building networks, exploring leadership, and nurturing your personal well-being. Take full advantage of the resources, mentors, and peers around you.

“I encourage you to embrace every opportunity that comes your way, build meaningful connections with your peers and mentors, most importantly, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

“Striking a balance between academics and other aspects of student life isn’t always easy, but it’s through this effort that you’ll discover your strengths.”

Chief Lambo later presented awards to winners of the inter-faculty debate, which featured majorly freshers, where they expressed.their thoughts on topical issues.

She urged the students to keep pushing boundaries, stay focused on goals, and use their time at LASU as a building block for the future.

The visioner of the event, Comrade Moyosoluwa Abisuga, in a chat with newsmen, hinted that the summit is a necessity, and gave a spoke how she has been involved in all aspects of student life since she got into the university.

“When I was in 100 Level, I was into many things, especially politics. I became the Head of Class (HOC) after admission into the university, I became a faculty legislator and I kept observing past vice presidents of the student union on how they run their administrations.

“They have always followed a kind of pattern, but in our own administration, we follow purpose and not pattern.

“So, we are going to break the chains of the ways things were being done. In this programme, we have the student union President, my humble self, the Sports Director, Social Director and the Vice Presidents from other campuses.

“I believe that being a Student Union leader is not an easy task and these people have made connections in one way or the other as Student Union leaders.

“Having them speak in this summit is giving the freshers a platform and an avenue to acquire substantial knowledge that they can use and put things in place that can be beneficial to them,” she said.

Commenting on what will be the next line of action after the summit, Comrade Abisuga cited inter-varsity debates among different universities that will produce grand winners, who will be given prizes.

She added that the inter-faculty debate is an avenue for freshers to tap new knowledge on some interesting topics that revolve around life.

According to her, it will help them to learn more, interface and hone their skills as public speakers and as debaters.

The 36th President of LASUSU, Comrade Adebayo Korede Peter, in his comments, said that “the Fresher Induction Summit is a lifetime programme, we’ve never had it like this before.

“The summit entails everything you need as a fresher, and settling into the university life. From welfarism to sports to academics, to politics, name it.

“So, the convener has provided an introductory settlement package for our fresh students.

“Freshers should be very intentional about this summit because when we are going out of our convenience to see that events like these are put together, it is for their benefit,” he said.

LASUSU’s Sports Officer, Comrade Folashade Ekun a reputable coach and human kinetic professional, ably represented by Comrade Ogunbanwo Iyanuoluwa, charged the freshers on the importance of sports involvement, citing the fact that it contributes immensely to the development of self-discipline, consistency and focus, which she said is a key ingredient for a successful academic experience.
