…Citing Poor Anambra Results, Silence From Peter Obi, And Personal Strain.

In a surprising development that has sent ripples through Nigeria’s opposition political circles, Morris Monye, a key figure in the Obi-Dient Movement, has resigned from his position as Director of Mobilization, citing disillusionment, financial strain, and lack of leadership communication from the movement’s leader, Peter Obi.

Monye, a political strategist who played a visible role in the 2023 general elections, announced his resignation in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday. He disclosed that despite investing over ?40 million of his personal funds to sustain grassroots mobilization and campaign structures across several states, particularly in Anambra, the results have been “disheartening and demotivating”

> “I gave my best, my time, my energy, and my personal resources to the cause because I believed deeply in the promise of a new Nigeria under Mr. Peter Obi. However, after the recent elections in Anambra and other states, it has become clear that something is fundamentally wrong with our coordination and leadership approach,” Monye lamented.

According to him, the poor showing of the Labour Party in Anambra State, considered Peter Obi’s political stronghold, reflects “a deep disconnect between the movement’s grassroots operatives and its top leadership.”

Monye expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of communication and appreciation from Obi himself, saying he had made several attempts to reach out or provide post-election feedback, “but there has been nothing — no call, no word, no direction.”

> “You can not build a movement on silence,” he stated. “Many of us who worked day and night feel abandoned. Leadership is not just about popularity; it’s about engagement, gratitude, and strategic continuity.”

He further revealed that the personal and emotional toll of the campaign had become unbearable, forcing him to “step back for the sake of sanity and self-reflection.”

Monye, who once contested for the Delta State governorship under the Labour Party, had been one of the more visible mobilizers of young voters, leveraging social media influence and grassroots networks to sustain the momentum of the Obi-Dient Movement after the 2023 elections.

His resignation has sparked mixed reactions within the movement. While some supporters have expressed empathy, acknowledging his sacrifices, others accused him of “publicly undermining” the cause at a sensitive time when internal cohesion is needed most.

Political observers say Monye’s resignation underscores growing internal cracks within the Labour Party and its support network, following a string of electoral disappointments in recent months. Analysts have also pointed to the absence of a formal structure for engagement between the party leadership and its volunteer base as a critical weakness that continues to erode morale.

As of press time, Peter Obi and the Labour Party have not issued an official response to Monye’s resignation.
