FG Confirms Diplomatic Talks with U.S. To Ease Rising Tensions

The Federal Government has confirmed that diplomatic engagements are underway to ease recent tensions between Nigeria and the United States, following weeks of strained relations over perceived differences in governance, security, and political developments.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the disclosure during an interview on Sky News, where he assured that both nations have reopened channels of dialogue and are making progress toward restoring mutual confidence.

“Channels of communication have been opened. I can confirm that we are talking with them, and I think they are understanding the situation better,” Idris said.

The minister explained that while he could not divulge specific details of the ongoing discussions, the current diplomatic engagements are aimed at clarifying certain misunderstandings about Nigeria’s internal security situation and political climate.

He emphasized that much of the tension was fueled by what he described as “incomplete or inaccurate assessments” of Nigeria’s governance dynamics and socio-political realities.

“We believe that most of the information is a result of a lack of proper understanding of the diversity and complexity of the problems we have at hand,” Idris stated.

According to him, the Nigerian government remains committed to maintaining constructive relations with all international partners, including the United States, noting that dialogue remains the best path to resolving differences and strengthening cooperation.

“Nigeria values its longstanding bilateral ties with the United States — relations that are deeply rooted in economic cooperation, security collaboration, and diplomatic support,” he added.

Idris expressed optimism that the ongoing diplomatic efforts will lead to a more balanced and mutually beneficial understanding between both nations, underscoring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to transparent engagement and global partnership.

Diplomatic observers say the recent friction may have been triggered by Western concerns over Nigeria’s handling of internal security operations, governance reforms, and human rights issues. However, the government’s latest move signals a renewed push toward rebuilding confidence and reaffirming Nigeria’s role as a key partner in regional stability and democratic cooperation.
