DSS Files Six-Count Charge Against Man For Calling For Military Coup

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a six-count charge against a 27-year-old man, Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, for allegedly advocating a military takeover of the Nigerian government through posts on social media.
The case, filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja, is marked FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025 and was instituted by DSS counsel, A.M. Danalami, on November 11, 2025.
According to the charge sheet, Onukwume, who resides in Umusayo Layout, Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, allegedly committed the offences in October 2025 by making a series of inciting posts on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @theagroman, calling for the overthrow of the democratically elected government.
The DSS accused him of offences contrary to and punishable under Sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended).
In one of the counts, the DSS alleged that Onukwume posted the message:
“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigeria Government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
Another count cited a separate post in which he allegedly wrote:
“It will happen eventually, Nigerian. The military needs your support now! Only them can save this country. The bastard in Aso Rock has basically sold this country to the West and they run our intelligence apparatus. Only the military can reset this country.”
In yet another post, Onukwume was accused of declaring:
“Tinubu has to go and APC has to die for Nigeria to have any semblance of normal life. And if you think your stupid votes can remove Tinubu, I’m here to tell you that you’re a fool.”
The DSS maintained that the posts were capable of causing fear, alarm, public disorder, and hostility toward the Federal Government, and constituted incitement against the Nigerian state.
Sources disclosed that the defendant is currently in custody and is expected to be arraigned before the end of the week.
If found guilty, Onukwume faces a possible term of imprisonment under the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrimes Act, both of which criminalize statements capable of undermining public peace, inciting mutiny, or promoting insurrection against constituted authority.
