Lagos APC To Peter Obi: Stop Jubilating Over Nigeria’s Challenges — Patriotism Is Not Selective Outrage

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a swipe at Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, accusing him of opportunism and selective patriotism following his reaction to the United States’ designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”

In a strongly worded statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Seye Oladejo (Mogaji), the party said Obi’s latest comments exemplify his tendency to turn grave national matters into “political theatre,” rather than display the balance, tact, and patriotism expected of a statesman.

“True to form, Obi once again attempted to turn a sensitive national issue into political drama instead of showing genuine statesmanship,” the APC spokesman said.
“Even more telling is that it took him unusually long to respond. For a man always seeking microphones and hashtags, his sudden silence was deafening until public criticism forced his hand.”

Oladejo argued that Obi’s eventual reaction to the U.S. designation lacked both conviction and leadership.

“When he finally spoke, what we saw was too little, too late, and too predictable. His statement lacked sincerity, urgency, and any unifying spirit,” he said.

“A Leader Who Is Only Happy When Nigeria Is Sad”

The Lagos APC maintained that true leaders defend their country in difficult moments and strike a balance between criticism and national pride.

“Real statesmen know that patriotism is not about exploiting bad news for political mileage,” the party said.
“Peter Obi appears happiest when Nigeria faces challenges, seeing every setback as a chance for political resurrection. That is not patriotism — it is sour politics born of electoral heartbreak.”

The ruling party emphasized that Nigeria’s current security challenges did not begin with the Tinubu administration, but were inherited from years of neglect and politicization. It credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for taking bold steps to address them head-on.

According to Oladejo, the administration is making measurable progress through:

  • Strengthening of military command and intelligence structures;
  • Deployment of modern technology and equipment;
  • Deepening of regional and international security collaboration; and
  • Tackling the economic roots of insecurity through sweeping reforms.

“While serious leaders are working, Obi and his online choir are still rehearsing 2023 grievances and clinging to foreign commentaries for political oxygen,” Oladejo stated.

“Obi Must Choose — Nigeria or Desperation”

The Lagos APC further challenged the former Anambra governor to make a clear choice between standing with Nigeria or remaining trapped in the echo chamber of “bitterness and resentment.”

“No serious nation is built on sulking and sensationalism. His behavior explains why Nigerians rejected him at the polls. Leadership demands maturity, not melodrama and delayed outrage,” the statement read.

Concluding, Oladejo reaffirmed confidence in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, insisting that Nigeria’s progress will not be halted by “those who profit politically from national difficulties.”

“Nigeria will not bow to those who celebrate her challenges. We urge citizens to stay focused on the Renewed Hope agenda. Nigeria will rise — with or without the naysayers,” the statement concluded.
