CAIDOV Commends Senate For The Passage of Sexual Offences Bill 2015 Prescribing Life Sentence for Rapists

The upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly, the Senate has been commended by the Centre Against Injustice And Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) for the bold step it took by prescribing life imprisonment for rapists and those who have sexual intercourse underage children.
The group stated that it was pleased with the cheery news from the National Assembly, stressing that with the passage of the Bill, the issue of sexual violence and unlawful carnal knowledge of children will be reduced drastically and will serve as warning signal to would be offenders.
CAIDOV in a press release on Friday signed by its Executive Director, Gbenga Soloki in Lagos called on all the states of the federation to ensure strict compliance and ensure that rapists are not allowed to go scot-free, while those who defile minors are made to face the full wrath of the law.
In his words; “we are elated with he passage of this all important Bill, which is an elixir to the fight against domestic violence, especially sexual violence.
“The fight against sexual abuse has been ongoing for so long and the passage of the Bill that prescribes life imprisonment for rapists and those who have sexual intercourse with underage children is a commendable action by the Senate, as such we salute the Senate for this.
“But for its effectiveness, the states should also key into this by ensuring sex offenders are not left off the hook, but rather be made to face the full wrath of the law as prescribed in this new Bill. Our state Governors should live up to expectations by protecting our children and the vulnerable in the society from pedophiles and violators of the right of vulnerable in the society.”
The group equally praised the initiator of the Bill, Senator Chris Anyanwu for the efforts and stated that prosperity will remember her for the lofty idea of the bill.
CAIDOV also praised the Senate Committee on Human Rights and Legal Matters, Chaired by Senator Umar Dahiru, for the painstaking efforts put into the Bill to ensure it’s passage.
The group then assured that it will continue the fight against sexual violence and ensure that perpetrators are made to face the music no matter how highly placed in the society.
