The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State Council, has appealed to the government of Governor Seyi Makinde of the state to recruit more teachers into the primary sub-sector of the state’s education system.

This was revealed in Ibadan, the state capital, by the Chairman of the state chapter of the NUT, Comrade Raji Oladimeji Ismail during the celebration of 2022 World Teachers’ Day.

Other demands by the NUT included the prompt release of the approved schools grants and the reconstruction of the road in front of the NUT State Secretariat at Oluyole Estate, Ring Road, Ibadan.

The teachers, who teach in secondary schools across the state, had appealed to the Oyo State Government to either regularize their appointments as TESCOM teachers or revert their appointment as Primary School teachers under the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB).

The Chairman said that absorption of the teachers into the post-primary sub-sector of Oyo State permanently will be another sign of the present administration’s commitment to the development of education.

While speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, Comrade Akin Alamu assured the teachers that their demands would be discussed with the governor.

Alamu revealed that the Oyo State Government has approved the next round of promotions in the state’s civil service, adding that the exercise will commence after the necessary paperwork.

He however, debunked insinuations that Oyo State took the 33rd position out of the 36 states in the country in the last West African Senior Secondary School Examinations (WASSCE).

The Chairman advised politicians to desist from politicising education in the state, saying that education has been improved tremendously under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.

Speaking at the event, the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Rahman Abiodun AbdulRaheem appealed to teachers in the state to embrace the State Government’s efforts in improving the education sector.

AbdulRaheem added that the Oyo State Government will not rest on its oars in ensuring that the education sector keeps soaring higher.

“It is pertinent to re-emphasize that the machinery of the state, ably led by His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has the determination to transform the education sector,” he said.

The Commissioner stressed that the state government has appointed 21 Permanent Secretaries/Inspectors General of Education and Permanent Secretaries/Tutor Generals to enhance effective monitoring of schools and service delivery.

He said that the Oyo State Government under Governor Seyi Makinde has put in place lots of activities in achieving his lofty ideas for the sector.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran said that the Board will continue to work for the welfare of the teachers in the state.

“To whom much is given, much is expected; therefore I appeal to you to key into the state government’s resolve to bring back the lost glory of the state in education by making sure that our children excel both in internal and external examinations,” he said.

Adeniran therefore, charged them to have a clearer vision of the goal and support the Ministry of Education, TESCOM and OYOSUBEB in making sure that Oyo remains top in the education sector.

The Oyo State NUT Council later gave awards to nine distinguished personalities in Oyo State.

According to Comrade Raji Oladimeji Ismail the awards are based on their exemplary leadership, dedication and unalloyed support to teachers’ welfare.

Ismail commended the Oyo State Government for its various welfare packages that he said have encouraged teachers in remodelling the society and training students in the state.

While pointing at the regular payment of teachers’ salaries and other entitlements, he also commended state government for the distribution of free textbooks and exercise books in all schools.
