What could have been a black Saturday in Lagos was narrowly averted when a fully loaded truck lost control and skidded off the Pen Cinema Bridge in the Agege area, crashing into two stationary commercial buses below.

According to Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck veered off the bridge while navigating a bend, leading to the dramatic fall.

The truck driver sustained severe fractures to both hands but was quickly rescued by LASTMA officials who responded promptly to the scene. He was later handed over to officers of the Elere Police Division and taken to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent medical treatment.

LASTMA personnel swiftly cordoned off the area, diverted traffic, and worked to prevent additional accidents. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit later removed the wreckage, restoring normal traffic flow along the busy Old Abeokuta Road.

“Preliminary inquiries suggest that the truck driver, who suffered grievous injuries, lost control while navigating the Pen Cinema Bridge, causing the vehicle to plunge onto two stationary buses beneath,” Adebayo stated.

Expressing concern over the accident, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki urged all motorists, especially truck drivers, to exercise heightened caution, particularly during the rainy season when road conditions become more hazardous.

The incident has once again underscored the urgent need for strict compliance with road safety regulations and the use of speed-limiting devices to reduce such occurrences.
