A high Chief in Port Novo, Benin Republic, Chief Toluwalase of Ajase-Ile has said that the embattled Yoruba activist and secessionist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho might be jailed in the West African Country.

It will be recalled that one of the offences slammed on Igboho by the authorities of the French speaking country is the possession of an international passport of Benin Republic despite not being a citizen of the country.

Igboho was arraigned in a Benin Republic Court in Cotonou on Thursday, but the case was adjourned to Friday and the judge ordered that the activist should be remanded in prison custody.

“It is likely that Sunday Igboho goes to jail for being in possession of this passport illegally because he is not a citizen,” said Chief Toluwalase.

Chief Toluwalase said that there was no way Igboho would not go to jail if it is true that he was found with the passport of the country, when he is not a citizen of the country.

The representative of the traditional rulers of Port Novo in Benin Republic told BBC Yoruba on Thursday that though Benin Republic might not be a big country, it has a strong and strict judicial system, especially when it comes to the issue of obtaining passport illegally.

He added that the council of traditional rulers has stepped into the matter, but that the law must take its course.

Chief Toluwalase stressed that Igboho has committed an offence to Benin Republic as a country and that he must face the music, while those who facilitated the issuance of the passport will also face the wrath of the law.

He stated that the process of obtaining international passport of Benin Republic is so cumbersome and that one of the requirements is that an applicant must give his or her family name.

The chief added that nobody could obtain the passport without first obtaining the National Identity Card (NIC) of the country.

Chief Toluwalase emphasised that those who do fake international passport of Benin Republic could not hold on it for so long as there is no way they could hide forever, adding that Igboho is in a big mess.
