How Suspected Internet Fraudster Killed Our Operative In Anambra – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detailed how one of its operatives, Aminu Salisu, an Assistant Superintendent, was killed by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Ikechukwu, during an operation in Awka, Anambra State.
According to a statement released by the EFCC on Sunday, the incident occurred on 17 January 2025 at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite. The operation, aimed at apprehending internet fraudsters, initially resulted in the arrest of 37 suspects at a two-storey building.
However, Ikechukwu, who monitored the investigators via a CCTV camera at his door, refused to grant them entry despite their identification. Instead, he opened fire, killing Salisu and wounding another officer conducting a search of his apartment.
Preliminary investigations revealed Ikechukwu’s involvement in coding and suspicious online medical supplies. Items recovered from his apartment included laptops, iPads, and recording devices, confirming his participation in internet fraud. He is currently in police custody and will face trial.
The EFCC condemned false social media narratives surrounding the incident and emphasized the dangers posed by internet fraudsters, who are increasingly involved in violent crimes.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to combating internet fraud and warned that any future attacks on its operatives would face the full force of the law.
