The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa, has called on Nigerians to show compassion to the less privileged and to foster unity across communities, especially during the Eid al-Adha celebration.

In a message released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Dave Agboola, ahead of the festival, Speaker Obasa underscored the importance of charity and empathy as core values of the Islamic celebration.

Obasa highlighted the significance of Eid al-Adha, which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) unwavering obedience to God through his willingness to sacrifice his son. He drew a powerful connection between this spirit of sacrifice and the modern imperative to support those in need.

“As we celebrate this important occasion,” he said, “let us not forget the underprivileged among us. Compassion must be at the heart of our celebrations, pushing us to extend a hand to the needy.”

The Speaker urged residents of Lagos, particularly the Muslim ummah, to engage in acts of kindness through donations, food sharing, and other charitable gestures that can uplift those facing hardship.

“I encourage everyone to open their hearts and contribute to the well-being of others. Together, we can ease suffering and foster a more inclusive and caring society.”

Obasa also emphasized that the values of sacrifice and selflessness should not be confined to festive seasons alone but should become guiding principles in daily life. He noted that consistent acts of generosity and solidarity help create a more harmonious and compassionate community.

Furthermore, the Speaker called on Nigerians to uphold the values of unity that Eid al-Adha represents. He stressed the importance of embracing diversity and strengthening communal bonds.

“Eid teaches us the strength in togetherness. Let us rise above our differences, support one another, and ensure that no one is left behind.”

Dr. Obasa concluded by extending warm greetings to all Muslims in Lagos State and beyond. He encouraged them to celebrate peacefully, responsibly, and with deep reflection on the essence of the holiday.

“Let us mark this Eid with gratitude and a renewed commitment to care for those around us. May this celebration bring peace, joy, and prosperity to us all.”
