Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday officially welcomed Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and their supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a watershed moment in Nigeria’s political landscape. Representing President Bola Tinubu at a grand event in Asaba, Shettima assured the defectors that they are now “co-owners” of the APC, highlighting the party’s commitment to unity, collaboration, and shared leadership.

Emphasizing the significance of the development, the Vice President underlined that the APC’s strength lies in its ability to manage differences through dialogue rather than imposition. He credited the party’s resilience since its 2013 formation to its inclusive spirit and democratic values. Shettima described the mass defection as a “declaration” of Nigeria’s enduring democratic vitality and a step toward building a stronger, more unified nation.

APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, hailed the event as historic, commending President Tinubu’s leadership for drawing credible leaders like Oborevwori into the party. Ganduje formally handed the APC flag and broom — the party’s symbol — to Governor Oborevwori, while Progressive Governors’ Forum Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, praised Delta State’s developmental strides under Oborevwori, affirming their alignment with APC ideals.

Speaking on behalf of the new members, Governor Oborevwori described the move not as a mere defection, but as a “movement,” asserting that Delta’s leaders and stakeholders had collectively resolved to align with the APC and support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Former Governor Okowa echoed this sentiment, stating that the decision was made in Delta State’s best interest, to better connect with the national government for the benefit of the people.

Several APC governors, national leaders, and party faithful gathered at the event to show their support for the historic political shift
