A tragic mishap on Saturday evening in the Sabon Gida area of Sokoto State has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 150 suspected bandits after a crowded boat conveying them capsized mid-transit.
Sources familiar with the incident said the vessel, believed to be carrying a large number of armed men, overturned while attempting to cross a local waterway, plunging all occupants into the water.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the boat was heavily loaded at the time of the  mishap, raising concerns about possible overcapacity. Many of those on board were reportedly unable to swim, worsening the scale of the tragedy.
“There was confusion when the boat went under. From what we gathered, very few, if any, made it out,” a local source disclosed.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from security authorities confirming the casualty figures or the identities of those involved.
If verified, the incident could mark a significant setback for armed groups operating across parts of Nigeria’s North-West, where banditry has continued to pose serious security challenges.
