A Pillar Remembered: Ikeja LG Celebrates Kemi Nelson’s Legacy in Brick and Stone

In a poignant ceremony that blended emotion, celebration, and reverence, the Ikeja Local Government officially commissioned a new Secretariat and Primary Health Center named in honour of the late Chief (Mrs.) Titilola Olukemi Nelson — a trailblazer in public service, women’s leadership, and grassroots empowerment in Lagos State.
The facilities — Kemi Nelson Secretariat and Kemi Nelson Primary Health Center — are designed to enhance public administration and healthcare access in the heart of Ikeja. More than just functional spaces, they now stand as enduring symbols of the life and legacy of a woman who devoted herself to service and community development.
The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, political figures, community leaders, and residents, all gathered to celebrate the the enduring legacy of the woman known simply to many as “Yeyesewa”
Speaking on behalf of the family, Adeyemi A. Nelson, her husband, delivered an emotional address:
“Standing here today is both emotional and uplifting. Emotional, because we still feel the deep absence of someone who meant the world to us; and uplifting, because this beautiful gesture is a sign that her light continues to shine—not just in our hearts, but in this community that she gave so much of herself to.
To see these buildings stand in her name is a powerful reminder that her story didn’t end when she passed—it continues, in brick and mortar, in legacy and love. This space will serve others, just as she did.”
Mr. Adeyemi Nelson, also offered a deeply personal reflection:
“Today, I am filled with pride and emotion as I see my dear wife honoured in this way. Kemi was not only a pillar in our home but also a beacon in this community.
She always told me that public service was not just a duty—it was a calling. Seeing this recognition, I know she would have been deeply humbled and moved. This is more than a memorial; it is a continuation of her purpose. And for that, my heart is full of gratitude.”
Chairman of the Ikeja Local Government, Honourable Mojeed Balogun, emphasized that the honour was not only well-deserved but long overdue. “Chief Kemi Nelson’s name is etched into the story of our development. Her compassion, courage, and leadership left a legacy we are proud to uplift.”
Chief (Mrs.) Kemi Nelson, who passed away in 2022, served in numerous capacities, including as Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Lagos State, South-West Zonal Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC),she was a member of the highest ranked decision making body, the governance Advisory council, GAG, Known for her charisma, resilience, and generosity, she was a mentor and role model to many, particularly women and young leaders.
As the plaques bearing her name were unveiled and prayers offered, the audience was reminded that the best monuments are not made of stone, but of lives impacted. These new civic institutions now stand as both practical resources and powerful reminders of a life lived in service of others.
