The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Iyonsi Timeyin Timothy, who was arrested over a case reported by the FBI in a coordinated “Operation reWired.”
The suspect was arrested in September, 2019 in Abuja after months of discreet investigations.
Counsel to the EFCC, Kufre Uduak arraigned the defendant on two count offences bothering on possession of fraudulent documents and obtaining money under false pretense.
EFCC said that Iyonsi Tumeyin Timothy, sometime in September, 2019 in Lagos within the lkeja Judicial Division with intent to defraud obtained the sum of $4,500 (Four Thousand Five Hundred US dollars) from one Julio Zogorski under the false pretence to wit: “romance scam, which you knew to be false.”
The defendant was a serving corps member with the National Assembly.
He was arraigned on Monday 3rd February before Justice Solebo of the Special Offences Court, Ikeja Judicial Division.
The accused however, pleaded “not guilty” to the two count charge.
The defense counsel, Jolone Ikomi pleaded that the defendant be admitted to bail on most liberal terms and conditions.
Justice Solebo subsequently granted him bail in the sum of N500,000.00, a surety in like sum, who must be a verifiable resident within the jurisdiction of the court.
The trial judge also ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of the bail conditions, while he adjourned the case to 18th of June, 2020 for commencement of trial.
Father Smuggles Hard Drugs for Son in EFCC Custody
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested a 60-year-old fish-farmer, Muyiwa Otuyalo, for attempting to smuggle in substance believed to be hard drug for his son, Damilola Otuyalo, who is currently in the custody of the Commission’s Ibadan zonal office.
The older Otuyalo was at the premises of the EFCC in Ibadan on Monday, February 17, 2020 supposedly to visit his son. But while discussing with the son, an officer noticed that he brought out a sachet of tablets and handed same to him.
The officer subsequently raise alarm which led to the confiscation of the drug. When the in-house nurse was called upon for assessment of the content, it was revealed that the said item was Rohypnol, a tranquilizer used under strict prescription for treatment of severe insomnia and assist in anesthesia.
The drug is said to possess high sedative effect and is rarely used except when prescribed by licensed medical officers. The younger Otuyalo was recently arrested after a criminal case of money laundering detected in the United Kingdom was reported against him.
The case which involved £45,000 was a fragment of a wider one involving about £500,000 for which he has been declared wanted by the London’s Metropolitan Police. He has been on the wanted list of the International Police, Interpol, before the petition was filed at the EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office.
Officers of the Nigerian Interpol were already in contact with the Commission in respect of the said case before the suspect’s father attempted to smuggle in the hard drug for him. Further investigations are ongoing, even as the Commission intends to hand him over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for possible prosecution of the suspected narcotic case. Assailants kill Aso Rock assistant director in Abuja
Laetitia Dagan, assistant director of administration at the state house, has been murdered at her Abuja residence.
The presidency confirmed her death via a statement on Tuesday.
Attah Esa, a deputy director of information at the state house, said the deceased was killed around 11pm on Monday.
The statement quoted Jalal Arabi, state house permanent secretary, as describing Dagan’s death as “a painful loss, not only to her immediate family, but also the entire State House.”
“She was a dedicated, hard-working officer, and we all feel pained by her dastardly and untimely death,” Arabi reportedly told her family during a condolence visit.
“We all share in your grief and pains, but be consoled by the fact that she lived a good life and contributed her best to the services of her nation.”
The permanent secretary also expressed confidence that the police will fish out Dagan’s killers and that “the law will take its course.”
The official’s death is the latest of the numerous killings being recorded in various parts of the country, including the federal capital territory.
A recent report by SBM Intelligence indicated that the nation’s capital has suffered 23 attacks which have led to the deaths of 27 persons in the last one year.
Airport Staff Arrested While Loading Cocaine Into Aircraft At Murtala Mohd Intl Airport
An airport worker has been arrested and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for drug trafficking at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The suspect, whose identity has not been made public, was said to have been intercepted by aviation security officials at about 12am on Saturday while attempting to courier the drugs.
The suspect, alleged to be a driver in one of the aviation agencies, was said to have concealed the drugs in a carton loaded inside a vehicle before he was caught at the airside of the airport.
He was later handed over to the NDLEA, where he was said to have confessed to the crime.
According to airport sources, a few other people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
An NDLEA source confirmed the incident, but stated that investigations were still ongoing and the findings would be made public upon completion.
